Four Essential Steps for Understanding Your Store’s Key Data
It is indispensable to properly analyze your store’s statistics. Study this data to plan your next move and learn if your past actions were conclusive.
1. Study the source of your visitors
The first thing to analyze is the source of your visitors: is it direct traffic? Is it traffic from search engines?
This information is useful to implement relevant operations to increase your store’s traffic, such as Google Adwords campaigns, partnerships with external sites, etc.
Pay attention to search engine key words bringing users to your site: if the word “white garden chair” represents a source of high traffic, make sure that your visitors can find information on this product at a glance.
2. Watch over your store’s bounce rate
Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who only go to one page on your site. You want a low rate. A high bounce rate isn’t bad just because it means visitors left, but also because it signifies that visitors didn’t find what they were looking for and left without conversion. Try to reduce your rate as much as possible by making some changes to your store.
Your store’s home page is a key factor that could lower your bounce rate. Make some trial changes over short periods of time (1-2 weeks). Add a slide show, highlight featured products and sale items as well as your strengths and satisfaction guarantees (delivery within 48 hours, 15-day reimbursement period, etc.). These elements will attract the attention of visitors who consult your catalogue.
3. Analyze the number of page views and average time spent on the site
These two relatively-related measures are great for learning if your community consults your catalogue. The longer someone spends on your page, the more likely you are to have substantial sales. This thus means your catalogue is clear and your users find everything they want. With each new page viewed, you increase your chances of sales.
4. Identify new visitors and returning visitors
It’s important to know the number of new visitors and “returning visitors,” those who come back to your site. You’ll see if you’re able to acquire new clients or if you retain the old ones.
This important data lets your qualify your visitors and spread out your marketing budgets according to your expectations.
By analyzing and crossing all your data and statistics you can thus qualify your visitors and implement efficient internal operations (changing your store’s look) and external operations (mailings, marketing, etc.). Take the time to analyze this data after every change to know its impact and pertinence. Statistics are effective and indispensable tools for better understanding your visitors and your store.

Three Reasons to Offer Online Chat in your Store
57% of e-commerce site visitors abandon their shopping carts if they can’t quickly find answers to their queries. You can easily lower this rate by proposing quick and direct answers to your visitors’ questions right within your store: add a live Chat!
1. Increase conversion rate
This opportunity has a big effect on your sales: 15-20% of visitors who immediately talk with retailers get converted into customers.
The Online Chat feature is an instant discussion between the internet user and the retailer. Thus whenever a customer has a question, the e-merchant can answer him or her right away. Furthermore, the retailer can encourage his or her clients to make a purchase by offering reductions or other advantages (such as free shipping) via the chat.
2. Improve customer relations
Chat lets you also improve customer relations and increase the rate of loyalty. 44% of internet users say that being assisted directly during a purchase on an e-commerce site is the most important feature for them.
In addition, a study by the French Association of Customer Relations (AFRC) found that “85% of visitors that had a dialogue say they are satisfied to very satisfied, versus only 50% for email.”
3. Perfect the buying experience with customer feedback
Talking directly to your customers is also a unique way to understand the how your clients make a purchase: How do they act? What are they looking for? Now you have true feedback from your community that you wouldn’t have received by email (after all, one doesn’t often send an email to explain why they haven’t made a purchase). Listen to them and make changes to your store according to their needs and their comments.
Now you understand that offering a live chat in your store will help you improve your store and its image to your clients. This is an effective way to have pertinent feedback and increase your sales, all while staying tuned in to your community!

Optimize your site for cell phones!
61% of cell phone users won’t return to a site that isn’t specially adapted to mobile devices. This figure demonstrates just how important it is that your business be optimized for Smartphones and other tablets. In this report, you’ll find 5 tips for promoting your mobile site purchases.
1) Site must be accessible
To improve your online presence, make sure your site supports all current mobile devices (computers, iPhone, iPad, etc). Your site must integrate operating systems used on these devices: iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows.
2) Loads in less than 3 seconds
Almost 50% of cell phone users will wait only 5 seconds before abandoning visiting a site. Remember, mobile consumers are often in a hurry and become frustrated when they can’t complete a task quickly. Verify that your site takes less than 3 seconds to load!
Since it takes longer to load a site on a cell phone, consider reducing your pages. Only keep images necessary for understanding your offer.
3) Simple and user-friendly interface
The specificities of the phone influence cell phone user behavior. The smaller screen-size and navigation system (mostly tactile) unique to cell phones makes navigation difficult. It seems necessary to simplify the user interface as much as possible, limiting the number of pages to facilitate your customer’s search. You must also reduce the number of categories and limit their contents. Use vertical menus, which adapt more easily to Smartphone screens. Your site must only have one column with blocks underneath each other.
4) Contains your entire line of products
Contrary to what one may believe, the device used to buy a product does not affect the purchase amount. Clients want to find all the products they love on the phones, so don’t reduce your offer. Let your clients buy whatever they want from wherever they are!
5) Indicates stores closest to customer
Today, the majority of mobile users use their Smartphones to search for information about products they intend to buy in a physical store. Therefore, you should consider indicating the physical store closest to your client. He or she will certainly be tempted to stop by and look for the product he or she wants to buy.
Growth perspectives for m-commerce are impressive, and the turnover for mobile sales is expected to pass 13 billion euros in France by 2015. Don’t wait any longer to enhance your site for cell phone use. Selling by cell requires different business practices than selling by computer, especially in terms of user-friendliness and content. Start applying the 5 tips from this report to your store and you’ll see your sales by cell phones increase.

How to go International with an E-Commerce Website?
Currently only 7% of European consumers buy online from a foreign site, yet many e-commerce sites are trying to extend their products internationally. Their main motivation is an increase of turnover; a study by Eurostat (Statistical Office of the European Community) shows that 11% of international e-commerce site sales come from foreign consumers. This strategy can really pay off. Here are three key tips for internationalizing an e-commerce site.
1. Understand the Culture of Target Countries
The European Union can count more than 500 million inhabitants in 27 nations speaking 23 official languages. All these countries have different cultures. An e-commerce site wishing to expand into foreign countries must first perform market research in the targeted countries in order to better understand them. You must avoid a cultural gap between the store and its consumers.
The choice of the country is usually tied to the activity of the store. Countries are often specialized by domains: Spain is an expert in tourism and culture while German consumers prefer ready-to-wear and the English like sporting goods and food. Before going international, make sure to do a lot of work ahead to avoid problems due to a culture gap.
2. Avoid a Language Barrier
Language is a key issue not to be neglected. It’s naturally the first barrier to internationalizing a commercial site; no one wants to buy a product on a site they can’t understand.
On the countrary, a good command of the host country’s language could land you very positive feedback. LinkedIn, for example, increased its Spanish membership by 128% after translating its site into Spanish. To really break the language barrier, don’t hesitate to hire translators who are native speakers of the target country’s language.
3. Choose a Secure Payment System
85% of cyber-buyers use a credit card. This is undoubtedly the most well-known and easiest means of payment worldwide. Therefore, it is absolutely imperative to have a secure system o payment by credit card on your site. In Europe there are more than 41 different well-known online payment systems. For convenience, use high-profile universal systems such as PayPal. The choice of a payment method lets you create a climate of trust between the consumer and the store. PrestaShop has more than 118 well-known payment modules. If you want to sell abroad, take a look at PrestaShop Addons for these helpful modules.
To achieve internationalization, you must above all understand the consumer and be able to reassure him or her. Therefore knowledge of their culture and language, as well as the use of a secure payment system, are good means for selling abroad.
Promote impulse buying on your e-commerce site
The internet, as an immediate media, is ideal for impulse buys. A selection of promotional offers placed on your site can boost e-shoppers unplanned purchases. In this newsletter you’ll learn how to identify and use them wisely to increase the volume of your sales!
1) Flash sales

‘Flash sales’, or sales with a time limit, are widely used by e-retailers to promote impulse buys. Spurred on by an attractive offer with a tight time limit, the e-shopper must quickly make a decision or risk losing the offer for good.
- The speedsale.se example
On this Swedish site, the customer has 4 seconds to decide if they want to buy a product or not!
Once you click on ‘i’m ready to shop’, they offer you the first discounted product and you have four seconds to click on it if you want to buy it! If you don’t click on the product within the four seconds, it disappears and another reduced product replaces it, and so on… If you miss a product, it is impossible to go back, you can simply no longer benefit from the offer!

The site does not redirect you to a product page, it simply displays a photo of the product with the price clearly marked.
The price is the determining factor for an impulse buy, it’s the price, circled in red, which attracts your attention first.
The creation of these ‘flash sales’ makes shopping really enjoyable. The buying process is combined with a game, creating excitement and a surge of adrenaline in the case of a great deal combined with disappointment and frustration when the result doesn’t live up to your hopes. This highly addictive shopping experience can significantly increase sales.

www.speedsale.se
- eBay daily deals
Here is another example of flash sales that you may use on your site. eBay offers internet shoppers ‘daily deals’ on numerous product categories for one day only. This is a clever way of encouraging e-shoppers to make purchases that they may not have planned. It’s hard to resist products with up to 80% off the normal price!

http://deals.ebay.com/
- Private sales
Private sales are sales reserved for certain customers. They come with a time limit and often encourage impulse buys. On your site you could, for example, restrict access to certain product categories to let certain customers benefit from reduced products that they would be unable to find elsewhere.
- Free delivery
Knowing that e-shoppers are sensitive to immediate reductions, you could offer free shipping for certain product categories for a limited time period. The aim: encouraging people to purchase products that they had not previously considered buying.
- Discount codes
Using the same concept as for delivery, you could also offer valuable discount codes which are only valid for a limited time period. For example, boldly display your discount code for your customers to see, for example ‘Discount code: LRR58, valid until this evening on all products’. Customers will make the most of this temporary deal, buying products that they would not have bought without your discount.
It’s also worth noting that these discount offers, as well as impulse buys, encourage customers to return to your site for future purchases. 32% of e-shoppers who have benefited from a coupon or discount code from a shop return to make another purchase. Get double the reward: increase the volume of sales and turn buyers into faithful customers!
2) Product stock levels
Displaying available stock can, to a certain extent, benefit impulse buying. If the number of products in stock is low, the customer interested in the product will be in more of a hurry to buy through fear of no longer finding the product at the proposed price on the site.
So as you have seen, there are many ways of promoting impulse buying on your site. All the promotional offers that we have discussed here: flash sales, discount codes, free delivery… encourage e-shoppers towards products that they hadn’t previously been interested in buying. More people participating means more customers returning. Put this advice into practice and boost your sales!

Mar262012News about the 1.5 version: we need your efforts!Author: Quentin Audrain
Categories: new release
We know that you expect it and the 18 PrestaShop developers of the solution and the whole team are working hard to bring you the best 1.5 final version as soon as possible.
Throughout the development process, many features have been added to those we had anticipated when the developments of version 1.5 began. These features, which will be very useful for every shop and the whole community, delayed this release.
We want to offer to current and future merchants, web agencies, developers, web designers, etc. a powerful version that is easy to use and it is for these reasons that the delays have lengthened. A test and quality department of 4 persons has been established within the PrestaShop team to be absolutely sure that the version offered to the community is stable and usable by all as soon as possible.
On the advice of this test and quality department, we let ourselves at least a couple of months to develop, stabilize and improve the version 1.5 Beta and present you with a powerful RC version for all uses. We are counting on you to help us finalize this version, your contributions can help us go faster! Several agencies, vendors and developers are already involved in optimizing this version on a daily basis, and you can do the same. Your support is crucial at this stage of the project.
We are currently defining a precise release date and rest assured, we will announce this soon. A new 1.5 Beta version is available today for testing purposes.
We will continue to regularly publish new Beta versions and will keep you posted of our progress. In the meantime, please feel free to use version 1.4.7 for your live stores.
Thank you for your patience. Please join us on the forums and the Forge to interact with the PrestaShop team. We are counting on the entire community to help us make this 1.5 release an amazing leap in e-commerce software!

Any chance that 1.5 will allow for list-or-grid for product category pages? I much prefer grid but have to go with a third-party theme to accomplish this. I’d rather stick with default theme…

Hi,
I have put my website development on hold for version 1.5, and have been waiting since February, since last time I was told it will be ready in March.
Could you give me an approximate release date i.e in 1 month or 3 months or 6 months. Coz accordingly I can choose version 1.4.7 to start or wait for version 1.5
Thanks,
Monica

SOLOMO, you said? We’ll explain everything again!
Behind this bizarre term actually hides the key trend of 2012: Social, Local, and Mobile. But what does this clearly mean for online merchants? You can’t escape it—SOLOMO will be at the heart of your business in 2012. The faster you start applying it, the further ahead you’ll be from your competitors.
Decrypting this term:
Social-SOSocial media was a major trend of 2011 and will continue to be in 2012. Numerous social platforms are born every week, and you’ll need to position yourself on the most promising ones.Local – LO
Local commerce is back in fashion and hasn’t been this popular in 50 years! Customers want to have experiences that touch and concern them. They want to connect their daily life and their connected life. The proof—recommendations have never worked so well. With a global site, you can now get recommendations for the bakery or restaurant down the street. Mobile – MO
The next major trend! Smartphone users are increasing every second and stay connected 24/7. Mobile-only platforms took off in 2011 (such as Instagram and Foursquare) and are now essential to the network of sharing content. In 2012, you will thus need to make your business more mobile-accessible, or risk losing clients. Millions of applications are downloaded everyday on mobile devices—why not yours too?
The perfect example of SOLOMO in 2011 is foursquare. This free mobile (MO) application uses geolocation to find your position, such as the café downstairs (LO), which you can then share with your friends (SO)!
How to apply it to your store NOW!
There are no specific rules to follow, but there are concepts to develop. Get your store involved in social media by proposing, for example, discounts to those who share your store’s products on facebook. You can also integrate your store directly into your fan page and let your community pay with facebook credit. It’s a new way to have happy customers!
You can also offer promotions adapted to clients based on their location!
Finally, make your store mobile-accessible. Apply at least one mobile theme to your store so that when your customers connect to it with their smartphones they’ll see a display adapted to their mobile device. Even better, opt for an app! It lets you powerfully manage marketing around your community with push notifications, geolocalisation, and more. You customers will have a store at the tip of their fingers 24/7 and can make purchases anywhere!
Now you’ve understood that the term SOLOMO brings together several key trends you can’t ignore. Let your imagination run free and evolve your business at the same time using these innovative technologies!
